What is the difference between a service dog and an emotional support animal?

A service dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability and is protected under the ADA for public access — restaurants, stores, workplaces, and transportation. An emotional support animal provides comfort through companionship and is protected under the Fair Housing Act for housing only. Service dogs require task training; emotional support animals do not.

Do I need to register my service dog with a national database?

No. There is no legitimate government-run service dog registry in the United States. Any website claiming you must register your service dog in a national database for a fee is selling something with no legal standing. The only documentation that matters is clinical documentation from a licensed healthcare provider confirming your disability and need.

Can I train my own service dog?

Yes. The ADA does not require service dogs to be professionally trained or certified. You may train your own service dog to perform tasks directly related to your disability. However, professional guidance from a Certified Service Dog Trainer can ensure task reliability and public access readiness. TheraPetic partners with CSDT-certified trainers through OfficialServiceDog.com.

What tasks can a service dog perform?

Service dogs can be trained for deep pressure therapy during panic attacks, interrupting self-harm behaviors, alerting to dissociative episodes, guiding handlers out of crowded environments, reminding handlers to take medication, waking handlers from nightmares, creating physical space in public, mobility assistance, allergen detection, and seizure response.

What are my rights with a service dog in public?

Under the ADA, your service dog can accompany you to any place the public is allowed — restaurants, stores, hotels, hospitals, schools, and public transportation. Businesses may only ask two questions: is this a service animal required because of a disability, and what task has it been trained to perform. They cannot charge fees or demand documentation.

Can a business refuse my service dog?

A business may only remove a service dog if the dog is out of control and the handler cannot regain control, or if the dog is not housebroken. They cannot refuse based on breed, size, other customers' allergies, or general discomfort. Refusing a legitimate service dog is a violation of ADA Title III.

Does my service dog need to wear a vest?

No. The ADA does not require service dogs to wear vests, patches, harnesses, or any identifying gear. While many handlers choose to use them for practical reasons, they are not legally required. No business or landlord can demand that your service dog wear identification.

What breeds can be service dogs?

Any breed can be a service dog. The ADA does not restrict service dogs by breed, size, or weight. Breed-specific legislation that bans certain dogs from housing does not apply to service animals under federal law. Your landlord cannot deny a service dog based on breed.

How do I get documentation for my service dog?

Documentation starts with a clinical evaluation by a Licensed Clinical Doctor who can assess whether your condition qualifies under federal disability guidelines. TheraPetic offers a free 3-minute screening at service-dog.org/screening. If you qualify, you receive same-day personalized documentation including housing letters and airline forms.

Are service dogs allowed on airplanes?

Yes. Trained psychiatric service dogs are permitted in the cabin on U.S. airlines under the DOT Air Carrier Access Act. Airlines may require a DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form completed at least 48 hours before departure. TheraPetic documentation includes the required airline forms delivered same-day with your documentation.

My landlord is demanding documentation within 48 hours — can TheraPetic help?

Yes. TheraPetic delivers electronic documentation same-day. Even if your landlord pressures you with a short deadline, your documentation can be in hand within hours of your clinical evaluation. There is no federal law requiring you to produce documentation within 48 hours — HUD guidance gives landlords 10 business days to respond to your request.

What if my support animal documentation is not accepted?

TheraPetic documentation is issued by Licensed Clinical Doctors with verified NPI numbers, state license numbers, and direct contact information on every letterhead — meeting all Fair Housing Act requirements. If a landlord or housing provider questions your documentation, they can verify it instantly at officialserviceanimal.com. If still denied, you can file a complaint with HUD at no cost.
